Motivational Interviewing

This introductory training session will explore Motivational Interviewing (MI) as a conversational style of interviewing used in counselling that addresses the ambivalence that individuals experience when faced with the need to change. MI is a collaborative, goal-oriented style of communications which pays particular attention to the language of change, designed to strengthen personal motivation for a commitment to a specific goal by eliciting and exploring the person’s own reasons for change within an atmosphere of acceptance and compassion.

Topics covered:
• What is MI?
• MI in care provision environments
• The Key Qualities of MI
• The 4 Processes of MI
• Skills of MI (OARS)
• The Underlying Spirit of MI
• When to Use MI

Session goals include:
To provide those with Motivational Interviewing with a perspective on how MI tools are relevant and useful for addressing change.
– Recognize how the “Spirit” of Motivational Interviewing promotes and supports a trauma informed system of care.
– Create interest among those new to the Motivational Interviewing techniques in pursuing more training and practice.
– To provide hope. There are techniques that work to support clients in the change process and empower them in the process.
– To support clients to make health related behavior changes using the principles and practices of Motivational Interviewing
– To identify practical strategies, to use in coaching conversations (or other helping relationships) to engage your client’s enthusiasm , cultivate motivation and work with or through their mixed feelings (ambivalence).

By the end of this session, you will walk away with practical MI strategies you can begin using in your daily work with clients, whether in counseling sessions, accessibility meetings, or informal check-ins.
